The Virgo SuperMoon ~ Changing Landscapes and a Million Small Stories

The astrological community has been buzzing lately, as it always does when celestial alignments are reflected in dramatic events in the collective. (A brief explanation of the astrological picture is explained below, including the Virgo Full Moon of March 19^th, a SuperMoon; Uranus’ ingress into Aries and Neptune in the final degree of Aquarius.)

With recent events such as the mass uprisings in the Middle East and the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis in Japan, without a doubt the world’s political and physical landscape is changing. World developments of such magnitude change millions of people’s lives forever and therefore also alter the psychological and emotional landscape of everyone directly caught up in them. To a lesser extent these kinds of events also shift the perspective of those of us who watch events unfold from a distance.

While contemplating or worrying about what the Virgo SuperMoon* means, if anything, let’s not forget that Virgo is all about the small details. It’s about the ‘little’ people, about service and about the minutiae of personal experience. While we may be buzzing about the big picture and the affect that recent events are having on politics, world economics and physical geography, try to remember that the parts that make up the whole are a million or more ‘small’ human stories. Humbling stories of love, dignity, heroism and hope in the face of loss, grief and personal tragedy.

As the Moon in Virgo opposes the Sun in Pisces, many of us feel inspired to send our prayers and healing thoughts out to those in need (Pisces). This is a beautiful thing to do, but perhaps we should also consider that Virgo is about offering practical, tangible help and balance our response accordingly.

Here’s a brief summary of the current astrological picture:


Uranus (shocks, sudden change, revolutionary energy, nuclear uranium) left watery Pisces on 11/12 March 2011 and moved into zero degrees of fiery Aries, the ‘urgent’ astrological degree where it is said that a great rush of energy projects outwards into the world, seeking manifestation.

Uranus (the great awakener) in Aries (fire, spirit, urgency, action) is square to Pluto (the great transformer/destroyer, plutonium, plutocrats) in Capricorn (structure, authority, control, physical and material processes, business). While this aspect does not become exact until June 2012, it is already close enough to be reflected in world events. Combined, these planets symbolise turmoil, social change, upheavals, rebellions, shake-ups and break-ups.

Neptune (disillusion, dissolution, the dissolving of barriers and boundaries, meltdowns, collective emotional undercurrents) in the final degree of Aquarius (community, brotherhood, humanitarianism, detachment, rebellion) is about to move into Pisces (compassion, imagination, the spiritual, the victim-saviour-martyr complex) on April 4^th 2011.

*The Virgo Full Moon on March 19 2011. This Full Moon is what is known as a SuperMoon or MegaMoon because the Moon will be closer to the Earth than it’s been for 18 years. Richard Nolle has associated SuperMoons with increased geophysical activity, including storms, high tides, seismic disturbances and volcanic eruptions.

On March 28, Jupiter makes the last of its current series of oppositions to Saturn, the peak of its current cycle. This cycle is associated with economic cycles, with the second half of the cycle, the phase we are just entering, associated with retraction, caution and withdrawal. Alignments of this cycle have also been associated with weather events.

The Virgo Super New Moon

On 8th September, the Sun and Moon conjoin at 16 degrees of Virgo for the Virgo New Moon.

This Virgo New Moon is actually a Super New Moon, because it occurs when the Moon is at its closest possible proximity to the Earth. This New Moon therefore will have a stronger energetic and gravitational pull, not just on the Earth itself, but on all of us.

So what is the message of this New Moon that we should heed?

Virgo is about how we serve ourselves and others and this Virgo New Moon makes very few aspects to other planets, save for an awkward semi-square to the Venus and Mars conjunction in relationship oriented Libra.

Therefore, this New Moon would be a good time to review how we are served by our relationships and how we serve those we are in relationship with. The fact that this is a critical time to do this is underlined by the fact that Venus is in the very last degree of Libra, the critical degree. Is this the last chance to sort out our relationships then? Of course not, but it is a very good time.

This ‘reviewing’ theme is very apt for a Virgo New Moon and is supported by a Mercury Retrograde in Virgo and the fact that all of the outer planets except Saturn are also currently Retrograde.

I hope this is a helpful Super Virgo New Moon time for you and you are able to use the energies to review, refresh, renew, reanalyze and reassess key relationships.

Remember though that the New Moon is a planning time, not an action time, but that the thinking you do now will prepare you for the action that needs to be taken around the time of the First Quarter Moon mid month and the dynamic Full Moon in Aries on the 23rd September.

Virgo Full Moon - How Can I Help?

If you ask one question this Full Moon, it should be How can I help?

It doesn’t matter if you’re asking yourself, another person or the universe and it doesn’t matter if you’re not sure what you’re asking. Under the Full Moon, things tend to come to light easily, so just ask the question with positive intent and see what occurs to you.

Why this question? Why now? Well, because this Full Moon puts the spotlight on the signs of Virgo and Pisces and as an opposing pair they address the issue of service.

There are lots of ways to serve, to help. There is practical service, literally doing something; spiritual service such as prayer, meditation and contemplation; service to yourself, including rest, recuperation and a bit of self-TLC and service to other individuals or groups such as lending a helping hand, listening, or just simply showing that you care.

The Full Moon is helped by Jupiter in Pisces conjunct the Sun. Jupiter is very happy in Pisces, like an honoured guest, where he can easily bring out the most positive expression of the Virgo and Pisces combination - helpfulness, kindness, compassion and empathy. Jupiter in this placement also reminds us that we are all connected and in asking the simple question, how can I help, we learn that when we help others, if we do so sincerely, we also help ourselves and vice versa.

This is also a wonderful Full Moon energy for creative and humanitarian work, carrying as it does a Venus-Uranus conjunction in Pisces and a Mercury-Neptune conjunction in Aquarius.

Virgo New Moon: Are You Being Served?

On 18th September, the Sun and Moon join Saturn at 25 degrees of Virgo for the Virgo New Moon.

Coming in the midst of the third exact hit of the long-running Saturn-Uranus oppositions, this is a powerful lunation indeed, especially as it falls right on the opposition.

This New Moon is a time to consider what and whom we serve. Is it, or they, worthy of our time and our energy? Is what we do for others healthy for everyone or is it a one-sided arrangement? Are we respecting the boundaries of those who serve us?

With this New Moon right on Saturn and opposing Uranus, we are compelled to ask these questions. If we find that we serve, or are served, merely out of an outdated sense of duty, then we need to make changes, re-write the rules or even throw away the rulebook altogether! Yes, this will upset the status quo and inevitably cause tension, but this is what the universe is calling us to do, both in our inner lives and in the world at large.

The T-square the New Moon, Mercury, Saturn and Uranus make to Pluto at the Aries Point reminds us that a new order and a fresh perspective is definitely coming, one way or another.

However, a Retrograde Mercury at 29 Virgo, moving back towards the Sun-Moon-Saturn position, reminds us that New Moons symbolise planning stages, so perhaps the time to act is not quite yet. Like all New Moons, this one is a seeding time, not an action time. We are in the dark and must plan and plant in the dark, with faith that what we seed will eventually grow strong and healthy and emerge into the light.

Mars in Cancer, a very passive placement for Mars, makes a series of Quintile aspects to the New Moon, Mercury and Saturn, helping us to plan the necessary changes with creativity and focus, whilst remaining both sympathetic to the feelings of others and protective of our own position.

The New Moon chart also features Venus in Leo opposing the Jupiter-Neptune-Chiron opposition in Aquarius. Staying with the New Moon Virgo theme of service, here are some questions we could ask ourselves at this time. Are we being overgenerous with the time we give to others or are we being greedy in what we ask from others, expecting to be treated like kings or queens? In our relationships, are partners delivering on their promises, or leaving us disappointed? Have we been a pushover for those we serve, hurting ourselves in the process? If so, perhaps it’s time to revalue our stock and the stock of others and restore a bit of good, honest, Aquarian fairness and equality into our relationships.

This New Moon will particularly affect Virgos born between 15-19 September; Pisceans born between 12-16 March; Geminis born between 13-17 June and Sagittarians born between 14-18 December, plus anyone with planets or points between 22-26 degrees of Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius or Pisces. A Celebration of Virgo

On 22nd August, the Sun moves into exacting, discriminating Virgo.

Quiet, hardworking, critical, modest, exacting, discriminating, dissecting, modest, humble, lacking in confidence are some of the common words and phrases used to describe Virgo. Not very exciting is it? Why not?

Perhaps it’s because it comes right after Leo in the Zodiac. Any sign would seem humble after Leo, would it not?

Imagine a scene in the playground, two young lads practicing their goal scoring skills:

Little Bobby Leo, as he kicks the ball straight through the goal posts: Yes!!!! I’m ace!!!! The best!!!! I’m gonna be the next Beckham or Ronaldo!!!!

Little Jimmy Virgo, carefully lining up his ball for his shot: Quiet Bobby, I’m trying to concentrate. He shoots, the ball goes in. Hey, I’m getting good at this, a bit more practice and I might make the school team.

Humble? Not really. Realistic, hardworking, practical, yes! You see, Virgo is an Earth sign. Earth signs say it like it is, they say I am what I am, and just like their other Earth cousins, Taurus and Capricorn and they just get on with it, without any of that Leo hubris or drama.

Perhaps part of the reason for Virgo’s bad press is that it rules the 6th house of the zodiac. The 6th house, traditionally, is malefic (‘bad’). It is the house of service, toil, chores, servants, subordinates, of small and humble things. It is also the house of illness and infirmity. Doesn’t sound like much fun does it?

Of all the concepts from the above list, I think the only one that Virgo should own and embrace is service. Service does not have to mean subordination. After all, when you strip away the power and the ego, what are our politicians and spiritual leaders if they are not servants? Of course, we have to hope that they are servants to a higher cause, for the greater good, but seen this way, there is nothing humble about it. It is a huge responsibility, a responsibility worthy of any Virgo.

However, Virgo, like the other Mutable signs (Gemini, Sagittarius and Pisces) must beware of spreading themselves too thin, scattering their energies and splintering off in too many directions. Saturn’s current transit through Virgo is certainly helping Virgo (and all Mutable types) to focus and the current series of history-making oppositions between Saturn in Virgo and Uranus in Pisces**, of which the next is September 15th, is a strong symbol for the positive push for change needed in the world right now.

On the world stage, it's finally time for the Pluto in Virgo* generation (Barack Obama and UK PM in waiting, David Cameron) to take the reins from the Pluto in Leo* bunch (George W Bush, Bill Clinton, Tony Blair, Gordon Brown) and clean up the messes they have made, ready for future, fair and just, Pluto in Libra* leaders.

So for now, if you have Sun in Virgo (or otherwise have strong Virgo in your horoscope) you're in very good company. Stand up, borrow a little bit of that Leo pride and confidence and get busy.

*The Pluto in Leo generation was born between 1938 and 1956. The Pluto in Virgo generation was born between 1957 and 1971 and the Pluto in Libra generation between 1972 and 1984. The start and end dates are approximate because Pluto tends to go back and forth before it settles into a new sign.
